Mesopotamian Music

The Mesopotamian people made and had so many instruments. The main instruments were the drum, lyre, woodwinds, harp, and lute. The Mesopotamians had so many amazing resources that were found in either Egypt or Ancient Mesopotamia.

The Mesopotamians made instruments out of many of these resources. Some of the resources were lapis lazuli, bullhide, wood for decorating, and mother of pearl. Lapis Lazuli is loved for exquisite color of blue. They used it on decoration instruments. The color is still beautiful today. They used bullhide for strings, and wood was used to shape the instruments. Mother of pearl was used for inside the soundbox , to expand the sound. Gold was used to cover the wood to make it look shiny.

They found lapis lazuli in Badakhshan which is now present day Afghanistan. They got wood from the north mountains and gold by trading with Egypt. The eastern desert music was played throughout the land.

The Mesopotamians play at so many places we play music at today.  The Mesopotamians played music at birthdays, festivals, and marriages. The Mesopotamians kept record of every birthday and the elderly wept when their children didn't come for their birthdays. They also celebrated at festivals. The king was slapped when he arrived and lost his power then slapped again. The reason he was slapped was to show that the God they were celebrating what's more important. The family of the groom planned the ceremony in marriages. If the bride did not want to live together they did not.

The Mesopotamians learn to played music in classes of Mesopotamian music. Most music was played for the goddess in Inana. Inana was the goddess of love and war.  They believed in demons, gods and goddesses. Demons are bad spirits gods and goddesses are mystical gods or goddesses.

The Mesopotamians had many resources to make instruments. The places they played were so many places we play for today. And the classes they learned to play for are close to the classes we learn to play in today.
